Lee was the first foreigner to receive the Chinese National Sculpture Magazine’s award for his contributions to sculpture and teaching in China.
Billy Lee was invited by the Department of Tourism and Commerce to visit the City of Ningbo, on the outskirts of Shanghai. He was also one of four panel members, all of whom are renowned in their field.
Billy Lee is among the few foreigners permitted to visit the private, off-limits-to-the-public section of the library in Ningbo. The commerce and tourism board also invited him to give a brief talk on public art. He met and exchanged books with the renowned Chinese artist, art historian, and educator Pan Gongkai at a book signing. Pan Gongkai served as president of two major art institutions in China: the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. He is also the son of the renowned 20th-century master of traditional Chinese painting, Pan Tianshou.

One of the top academies, Tianjin Fine Art Academy, invited professor Billy Lee to lecture and teach a two-week course on abstract art. Professor Lee was also invited to lecture at the University of Technology, Beijing.
